Fandom Talk

This is commentary comedy but I'm hoping you get that.
I'm not actually mad. Don't. Take. This. Seriously.
It's opinion.

If you know me, you know I love Prince. If you get bored enough and want to Google me, you'll find that I use references from his songs for my usernames. If you didn't, now you know. (If you didn't care, you probably should stop reading this blog and spread your delightful feelings on a message board or something.)

I know he wasn't perfect. Who is? He was great, ground-breaking, and wrote/created some of the best music we have to this day. It's timeless, it's got something for every mood. The world knows he was talented, and his fans celebrate that fact with his musical legacy almost daily. We're no different from the Lambily (Mariah Carey fans), Little Monsters (Gaga's people), or The Beyhive (Beyonce's clan of fans). I can admit that we're a little koo-koo sometimes, but it's all out of love. We sort of assume/hope that our friends and family respect our fandom, and try not to use it against us to make points. It gets a little problematic, especially for super and ultra fans. All we ask is that you don't go there. PLEASE. If we gotta respect your fandoms, don't roll up into ours talking mess. Especially if we're talking galactic apples and high-end musical oranges.

Don't go there.

Full stop, pump the brakes, turn around, go home.

I knowwww there are no Internet or social rules about this, but it's how fights start, people. Grouchy, crazy, stupid, grapes-in-your-eyes fights. It's simple: respect the fandom. Now, there's exceptions. Tumblr is a prime example. Tumblr is the home to the nuttiest fandoms. Fandoms where people think Columbine and the shooters are cool. Or that Meth is awesome. Or stuff like stealing and French kissing dogs is tip-topitty. That's the line, it needs to be drawn, and here's a nun to kink shame you to Heck for it. You're doing a bad thing, and this nun is waiting for you with a big ruler and a wagging finger.

But when it comes to Prince? The fine sexy muthaf*cker below? No touchy. He does not belong in your argument. You will never eat my giant Twix Bars again if you do it. Leave. Prince. Alone.

We mourn his loss because he's gone too soon. If you can't handle that, log off. We respect your fandoms (most of us do), and tend to call out bandwagon folks 'cause it's funny. My argument, yesterday, wasn't about actual fans--it was more about people who post overkill and never have really set foot into the fandom a day in their lives. Or the obnoxious people who just post and post and post, flooding the crap outta everything. The other person brought up Prince and how everyone respected when we mourned his death and celebrated his birthday.

...Okay? That's what people do? What's your point? All fandoms celebrate specific days. It's a little bit bigger, depending on the show/celebrity/movie. However, can we leave PRINCE outta this? Can we NOT use him? At all? He's awesome, we're still mourning, and it's not like you don't have a choice to unfollow or unfriend people who do too much for you. Just sayin'. Before it's pointed out--yes, we know fandoms suffer losses too. A lot of us have ties to your losses, or out of respect want to send condolences. So it's not about a celeb or a piece of entertainment being better than another. I think (with the exception of super screwed up fandoms that actually have hurt people or are super socially unacceptable...) fandoms around this world should be respected. It's heard and understood/

Still--

Prince is everything to me. If you love Roni, you won't go there.

(If you don't love me, you'll probably go there. And I'll mail glitter to your house.)
