I decided to wait a day and some change before I started posting pics and such, out of respect for the request made at the SGI Day event. (I will admit to slipping a couple, but that was technically before we were asked not to. I'M SORRY CHICAGO ZONE! PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!)
What can I say about Sunday? It's Weds. afternoon, and I'm still having trouble describing the experience perfectly. There is no perfection to describe the energy, the love, and the happiness. There were so many people at the SGI Center that day. Unfortunately, I missed the commemorative meeting at 10 AM. However, I made it just in time to see the second half--the unveiling of Sensei Ikeda's honorary street sign, and the fabulous concert featuring the Great Lakes Naval Band. Let me just say this about the band--they cooked. They cooked, gave us dessert, and left us full and waddling outside of the auditorium. I want the video I captured to speak for the day. If I try to explain how I felt, this post will be in the saved files forever. (Part 2 with the band is coming soon.)
I'll close with this--it was wonderful being out in the chilly snow/rain as the dignitaries spoke. Chills ran through my body as Danny Nagashima gave his encouragement. The crowd roared when Akemi Bailey-Haynie stepped up and spoke. When the sign was unveiled, we all sang "Forever Sensei". It was wonderful. It was wonderful. I think that Chicago's celebration of SGI's 40th Anniversary was quite the event. Here's to many more.
I stayed afterward, willingly giving my service to help clean a bit. I reconsidered my Byakuren offer, watching all the lovely ladies in black and white do their thing. After all of that, there were snacks and evening Gongyo with everyone who was still there. A great way to end the day. We also got commemorative stones. I don't know where I'm putting mine, but I want to see it every day. :-) Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo!
