Holiday Gifting!

It's that time of year again, and I had to find a way to make my money stretch to gift a group of people. A lot of people say "awww, you didn't have to!", but I always try to give back to those who have given to me throughout the year. So, it was no big deal to try and find something everyone special could enjoy. I decided on some yummy edibles in pretty gift bags. (That are actually jewelry bags, but shhhhhh!)

I figured this was a gift that couldn't go wrong. Who doesn't like fun-sized, holiday-themed candy? (By the way, yes, Nichiren Buddhists say "holiday" instead of "Christmas". However, I have talked to fellow Buddhists who use the term interchangeably.) I still tried to pick carefully, making sure not to get too-sweet items for those who might have specific dietary needs. I also tried to avoid getting nutty and/or spicy sweets. It wasn't a perfect effort (the variety pack bag had nut-filled and nut-related goodies), but the SGI-USA crew of Brainerd District enjoyed their sweets. Here's what I put in the bag:

  • Mini candy canes
  • Starlight peppermints
  • Caramel Santas
  • Hershey's Assorted classics (Reese's Pieces, Mr. Goodbar, Dark and Milk Chocolate Mini Hershey's Bars.)

'Twas just a little something to say "thank you" to them for ushering me into this Buddhism with open arms and big hearts. They are wonderful people who share wisdom, encouragement, inspiration, and so much more. They are an extended family, and it feels like we've been together for years and years. No doubt, many moons ago, we were together.

It doesn't take much to gift the ones you love. It's the thought behind the gift, and not so much how much it cost. I really like the idea of group gifting, and putting small goodies in a festive bag. It can be anything you'd like it to be--candy, cookies, toiletries, toys, stationary. You can even slip gift cards inside, if they're small enough to fit.
Everyone loved their bags!

Grab/gift bags are easy to put together, if you search for the sales. Stores such as K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and even the local grocer always have tiny toiletries and stocking stuffers. Depending on the time of year, they have clearance bins full of great stuff. Holiday seasons always have that "cusp time" right before things get into full swing. Late November, early December is usually the best time to get crackin'. Hit up places like Michael's or other hobby stores to get baskets, fillers, decorations, and more.

Creating small gifts/gift bags are a great way to cover a lot of people without completely depleting holiday funds. This way, the gifts are all equally priced, and you don't have to worry about people feeling bad about not getting a good gift. (If they still complain, that's on them. >.> You're trying to be nice, doggone it!) Whatever your personal budget may be, it's a smart way to cover all bases at once.
