"Tooken"--a.k.a. A "Word" that makes Me Cringe...

Oh my Lord. Oh my Buddha. Tooken. Tooken. Wanna watch the spawn of a teacher cringe? Say the "word" tooken. No wait, Don't say the "word" "tooken". It's not a word. If you think it's a word, I'm going to throw a soft dictionary at you. I'm going to give you matriarchal Brown side-eye and patriarchal Williams grunts of disapproval. Tooken. Is. NOT. A. WORD!!!!!

I keep hearing this word coming from the mounts of people on daytime TV. On Maury, on court shows, and any other scandalous daytime trash that happens to be on the brain frying TV. Granted the public school system has failed us all in some way, think about how your English teachers feel. You're a grown person of age in front of a camera, saying "Tooken". I couldn't find the exact clip from Judge Judy with the good lady correcting someone, but...here's a clip of someone saying tooken.

I mean, okay I don't have the best grammatical skills. I can admit that those sentence diagrams still give me the shivers. My future editor will have a LOT to edit if I ever get discovered as a writer. My former professors and teachers have made papers bleed in the past. However, you will never, ever, eeeeever hear me say/speak/write the "word" tooken. It's a bothersome "word" that drives me crazy. Not so much in a way that leads to angry flipping of tables, but just enough to make me go "uggggh" every time I hear it.

I've been surrounded by AAVE all my life. Online, offline. I can't speak for everyone in every city, but, "tooken" has never been part of the vocab. You've got taken, take, and took. No tooken. Not even in the most hardcore areas with their own vernacular. What is this "tooken" you speak of? Is this real? Are these people being paid to sound stupid? Are these people acting from a script? I swear, it's a TV thing. Whatever the case--

PLEASE STOP SAYING TOOKEN! IT'S NOT A WORD. THE WORD/WORDS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR ARE EITHER....

That's it. Unless you're talking about a toucan (which I doubt), you're uh....you're uh....kinda making yourself look goofy. But alas--so as long as daytime trash TV has an audience, "tooken" will be violating our ears. May the deity/deities of our choice have mercy on our souls. One can only hope this word doesn't become one in the future.
