Somebody tried to whip shea butter and coconut oil together. Somebody messed it up, and used the last of her coconut oil and old shea butter (with a hint of Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding) to create a mess. So, I wasted an hour trying to whip up some hair products, getting all sweaty and disturbing the peace within a 5-mile radius with my hand mixer and Ninja Food Processor. Sigh.
It's a simple recipe, really. I was just so eager to whip some up like the natural hair pros that I pretty much skimmed the recipe. I figured "what the heck, might as well wing it without measuring!" Right. The recipe says it takes twenty minutes. So, after twenty minutes, I'm wondering why my stuff still looks yellow, frothy, and oily. See where it says to add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil? Er uh, I just poured in the rest of what little I had in the jar. I melted all the old shea butter I had (about 4 to 6 ounces), and was confident it would all blend together. Uh, no.
So I'm in the kitchen with my iPod, blending the crap outta this melted shea butter and coconut oil, waiting
for the whip appeal. I'm shifting hands, feeling the crappy hand mixer motor get hot, and sweating while Prince croons about the love of his life. Eighteen minutes left. I think I see froth, I think the mix is getting heavier. Again, no.
Four minutes left. This stuff ain't turning white. I'm getting frustrated, reaching for my Ninja Blender. Kick that on, and wait...wait...IT'S TURNING WHITE! I'm thinkin' that maybe this is the key. I let it blend and blend. Maybe it's gonna whip. No whip. All white, all froth. Motor's getting hot, so I go back to the mixer. Time's up.
Eventually I get tired of standing around the kitchen, sweating and looking stupid to passers-by. I'm sure my poor neighbors are tired of hearing "reeeeearrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhblblblblblblbl" sounds coming out of our window. It's been about forty dang minutes. I break. I decide to add some Miss Jessie's to see if that will help the whip.
OF COURSE NOT! Not one bit. It tried to get fluffy, but didn't quite make it. So, I just sighed and poured my now light-purple liquid oily mix into a plastic container. I'll probably try again some fine day, having carefully read the directions. I'm pretty sure it was all that dang coconut oil. In the meantime, I think I'll just buy some whipped shea butter. If you know a good dealer/vendor/maker, feel free to refer in the comments.
