Natural Hair Product Review: Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils

It's time for yet another product review, and this one is for my naturalistas on a budget. If you're like me, sometimes that 16-dollar price tag for the so-called greats of the natural hair community are just too dang high. If sixty bucks (and that's before the shipping and handling, thank you.) in the digital shopping cart just isn't credit and dollar-friendly, perhaps a session with Aunt Jackie's Curls and Coils could be for you. It's $9.99 per item online, but $5.99 at a dollar store near you.

I'm a rule-breaker when it comes to avoiding the product junkie title. I'm still looking for the perfect, easy, and affordable regimen for my type 4a and 4c hair. While I'm pretty sure I've got my Fall-early Spring hair set down, my Summer regulars need to be a bit more cost effective. Shoot, I've got Sallie Mae and Great Lakes coming for their coins. Give a dame a break!

I decided to give the unknown Aunt Jackie's a try, tired of spending waaay too much for competitors that seemed to be adding all kinds of harsh oils and whatnot to their products. At eight ounces, my hair was letting me know "this is a no-no". Deciding to test the waters of strange product newness, I was strangely surprised and quite satisfied with what Auntie had to offer Ms. Williams. I decided to to a pic and video combo to review. Pour a drink, sit a spell. I've got hair talk for ya.

First things first, everything is tropical-smelling. Yes, I actually opened every single bottle just to be able to describe the scents. It's pretty much all the same--some kind of fruity business that reminds me of a blue raspberry Freeze Pop, with a hint of gentle mango. While the shampoo and detangler really didn't impress me, the conditioner and styling custard get big shiny seals of coarse 'n' kinky hair approval. Sidenote, I had a blast getting product in my eye, just to document how it all went down in the bathroom.

The shampoo wasn't really all that impressive, but did have quite a different texture than what I'm used to. It was a bit creamy. It actually made my hair feel a bit dry. Not a bad dry, but rather a strange feeling like hmm....perhaps a teeny bit like straw. Like I said in the video, I will be giving it another try this weekend, since the rest of the product line was so good to my hair.

I had major slip with just the conditioner and my own addition of extra virgin Coconut Oil. I let it sit for 20 minutes under a shower cap. Once I ran the wide-tooth comb through my tresses in the shower, it was a complete and utter slide through almost every lock of hair on my foofy big ol' head. For extra hair insurance, I used the detangler anyway, just for the claim of moisture balance. I tell you what, there was some serious moisture. By the time it was twist-out time, I didn't really have to mist with water until I was at the tail end of styling.

Keep in mind that the Curl La-La is suggested for a braid out, but it made my twist out feel just lovely. It frizzed quite a bit, but I simply re-applied the custard with a re-twist where it was needed. Out of all the products, the Curl La-La is my absolute fave. The texture will fool you, making one think it's as flimsy as a wannabe natural product. However, it has just as much hold as Kinky-Curly, Miss Jessie's, and even my favorite Cantu Gel. What it lacks, however, is that crunchy feeling. But...er...you don't want that anyway, do you?
