Product Review--O.N.E. Coconut Water

It's that time again, dear reader/readers. I've gone to market for one thing and have returned back to my little brown cottage with something new. This time, It's O.N.E. Coconut Water (with a splash of mango.). Pure curiosity inspired this affordable purchase. Coming in at $1.38 at my local Jewel-Osco, I shrugged my shoulders and grabbed two tetra packs. Since they only contain about 8.5 ounces of juice...er....water, it seemed like a harmless little purchase.

Here's a little basic knowledge on coconut water itself. I highly suggest using Google for extra research. It's very interesting.

  • Comes from young, green coconuts.
  • Has been relentlessly marketed by various brands as a sports drink because of high potassium and mineral levels. Also has antioxidants.
  • Low-Cal, low-fat drink.
There are so many brands of coconut water out there. I meant to try Vita Coco, but eh. I'm assuming as a coconut water newbie that they're probably all in the same flavor department. I'm sure, however, that I could be terribly wrong. On sites such as Amazon.com, a lot of people tend to say other brands are "too sugary" This is not the case with O.N.E.
If you're looking for something mega-sweet, this probably isn't the drink for you. While there is some sweetness, it's nothing like your typical fruit juice. With only 20 grams of sugar per serving, O.N.E. Coconut Water tastes more like gently sweetened and watered down juice. But, hello, it's NOT juice! It's water! This is a drink that's more of a subtle-tasting event. You get a hint of coconut. There's a hint of the mango flavor. What you don't taste is the overwhelming fruity-ness one might be used to when it comes to a flavored beverage. Consider this drink to be on the very healthy side of thirst-quenching.

When I had my first sip of this water, I won't lie--I cringed. While it did remind me of a sports drink, it was a lot less sporty as Gatorade or Powerade. It was more like somebody put real fruit flavors into water and sprinkled a hint of sugar into the tetra pack. It's an acquired taste kind of drink. For me, however, the jury is still debating. If I were to drink these, it would probably be after a workout or a trail session with my father. Which isn't a bad idea, actually. Yeah. This...this would be a great healthy choice for someone who's working out.

I'd rate O.N.E. Coconut Water as "not bad". It's a smooth, watery drink that's pretty much exactly what it says--coconut water. If you're not into flavors, there is the option to have it sans-the fruit splash. However, if you're into the flavors, give the "with a splash" versions a try. It comes in other flavors such as pineapple and guava. There is natural sweetness, but not that usual brand of artificial sweetness most of us know and love. This is eighty calories of thirst-quenching, gluten-free goodness....for your health. ;-)
