In Search of the Little Blue Dress (Plus Size Edition)

Everyone talks about the Little Black Dress that every woman needs in her wardrobe. Well, I want to talk about the Little BLUE Dress that every plus-size woman should consider. Since it's Summertime, it's the perfect season for such a lovely, light color. Check out how a pair of blue dangle earrings in my collection inspired a search for an outfit fit for the sky.

A month ago, my father told me a cousin in Minnesota was getting married. I groaned inside my head, wondering how long I'd have this time to come up with a simple look for this event. Here's the thing--I do enjoy looking and feeling pretty, but I totally HATE getting extremely complicated with it. I'm a simple kind of lady with a relaxed look in mind. So I went to my usual staple of stores online to seek out my look for the wedding. First, I started with the basics. I allowed my earrings to be the choice of color. It was between a blue pair and a purple pair.  I also had a pair of shoes (nice, flat black sandals with a slight embellishment) in mind. Once I had the outfit color down, I went to Old Navy's plus-size dress section first. If you remember my last blog about the Graduation Dress, you know how crazy I am over their stuff.
Simple shoes for me--not fond of heels or wedges!

Old Navy's selection was great, but it wasn't exactly popping. In any case, a few dresses caught my eye for the sake of consideration. They had a Maxi dress with a keyhole design that was okay, but it really didn't seem like a good fit for a wedding. Also, I have the tendency to trip over flat surfaces. Imagine that on top of being in such a pretty dress. I also didn't quite care for the look of the fabric up-close. It reminded me of a denim purse or a denim dress. Next was the Shirred Jersey Dress. It seemed a little too casual for a wedding. Maybe for a nice dinner out. The final dress was a Ruffle-Neck Jersey Dress. Dressy enough for me, but not necessarily a head-turner. It seemed like a "comfort zone" dress.

I moved on to a list of other plus size stores found here by fellow blogger Deep Queen Diva. Although they were a LOT more pricier than I'd like to spend on a dress, I still took a peek. (I just love her style, dontcha know!) My first stop was Torrid. As always, I checked their sales section first. While they had dresses in my size, they did not have any in the color I wanted. (Also, I refused to wear anything strapless!) The only dress that seemed to fit the bill was their Floral Pleated Tube Dress. The price, however, was not fitting. Frustrated, I kept going through the list until it dawned on me to check Amazon. So, I took a detour before going back to the stores on her list. This beauty popped up! I was so happy! I was also shocked. Amazon seems to have wavering periods of good plus-size clothing from time to time. Now, I needed a scarf/hair accent to go with the dress. I found a lovely black scarf and a dreamy, shiny blue number bursting with colors! That was it. I had the dress, the scarf, and the earrings and shoes were already in my collection. It took me about a week to find the entire look.

So I am amped and ready to go to MN for this trip. I have it all set up and I know that I'll need to get ready a couple of weeks from now. Then, my father comes back. We weren't invited to the wedding, but the reception. Aww. THEN he tells me that I don't have to go anymore because he's just going to take some other cousins. AWWW! Of course I felt bad, because I had such a good time picking out my look. I was even going to dabble in wearing a little light eyeshadow! Well, I made sure to save everything. I saved the dress, the scarves, and kept the look in mind for another time. In any case, it just goes to show that the most simple pieces in your wardrobe can end up creating some lovely outfits for the special events in your life. Whether it's a complex outfit or a comfortable one, it's fun to experiment and customize something just for yourself.
